Oh, Morrissey

Wow, he made it into my 'Latest Headlines' RSS feed so I just had to mention. Nothing that interesting though about immigration.

He's suing NME over some story:

The magazine criticised the former Smiths star for allegedly telling
a reporter Britain had lost its identity due to high levels of immigration.

Go here for more info: Morrissey vs. the NME.

I just made up a New Word

Ignorism

I'll get back to you on the definition.

Well it's not in the dictionary but if you Google the word it has been used before but I've never heard of it until I just came up w/ it.

I think I meant to say Oxymoron for the example: the broad focus, but instead I called it an ignorism.

Weekend Recap: Most Boring ever?

My holiday weekend was quite boring, considering some of the weekends I've had recently. The main reason was I'm out of money. I only get paid once a month, last day of the month, so unfortunately this month I was 2 weeks from payday and overdrawn on my checking account. Well I haven't mentioned the Tuesday night experiment. That really took a toll on me.

So let's back up a little to last Tues. Went to the Enormous Room to see if their G&Ts were particularly strong or if my friend had been drugged on her first date w/ some guy. So the experiment was for each of us to have 3 G&Ts and see if we forgot the rest of the night. Turns out we couldn't just stop at the 3 G&Ts, there were then whiskey drinks and shots and eventually me and TC took a cab home because JL wanted to hang w/ the DJ. TC and I were fine but JL ended up forgetting stuff so now I'm not so sure she was drugged. Maybe it's just here :0) Anway, the next day at work sucked. I felt really sick! I think that night is still a little too fresh in my mind so coupled w/ my lack of money I didn't venture out this holiday weekend.

Wed night I remember watching TV w/ my roomies, what it was I'm trying to remember. There was an SU game on at 9:30 and I didn't start watching it until halftime because we were watching something else. Wed night is what on TV? Oh yeah, Kitchen Nightmares. Unfortunately SU lost the game.

Thurs morning was the Gobble, Gobble, Gobble. I already mentioned that so I won't repeat.

Friday morning I was eating breakfast w/ my roomies and RR flipped out on me because I took a bite of his donut because he was saying something ridiculous and I was trying to make him mad in a joking way but there was no joking w/ him and we didn't speak again until last night.

What else did I do all weekend? Not much. I was on call but luckily didn't get called in at all. Went running. Did a nice 8 miles yesterday. Watched movies (my rating out of 5 stars): Consenting Adults (3), Crash (4), Mr. Brooks (3.5), Hostel 2 (2.5). At least 3 of the movies had nudity, I don't think Crash did, my top priority for seeing a movie so that was good. Plus plenty of bloody killing, yeah!

That's it for Weekend Recap I think.

Another new feature I'll try to phase in: I used to...

White Hen cashier: You look aggravated

Me: shake my head No

White Hen cashier: Just hungry?

Me: Yeah

Really I wanted to say Yeah I'm aggravated. You three are standing there like white trash assholes going on about your nonsense instead of just keeping your mouths shut and taking care of customers.

I just went in for some snacks. I live right next door so go there when I need something quick. I've never seen these people working there before. Normally I like the people working there for the most part. Today there were 3 people behind the counter. A 40+ something white trash woman, a 20 something white trash chick in a wife beater and about 7 months pregnant who could have been the woman's daughter for all I know, and the third was maybe an Indian guy 35+ or so who didn't look white trash but guilty by association. The pregnant chick was talking about some conversation she had w/ I assume a friend about how she should punch someone at work, a customer?, I don't know but I'm standing there while they run my credit card and I had nothing to offer the conversation and they were making me a bit uncomfortable so I guess I had some face on that the woman thought was aggravated. Why the hell she has to call me out on it I don't know. Bitch, you're working, leave me alone. If I look aggravated, whatever. I can't tell you I'm aggravated at you, your pregnant bitch will punch me or maybe you will or I can't come in to stupid White Hen anymore, who knows. You don't ask customers that. If they are aggravated it's because of you so if you think that they are, don't ask, just assume it's you and change your attitude.

Bottom line, leave me alone and do your fucking job!

Hope you had a happy turkey day!

I ran a race in the morning. The Gobble, Gobble, Gobble in Davis Sq. It was very convenient to take the T from Charles/MGH to Davis but that's when the trouble started. I was trying to meet Tara and her sister before the race and we were on the phone when we were trying to coordinate where to meet and my phone went dead. So I stood around trying to spot her but when it was 15 min. to race time I had to go find the bag drop-off to get rid of my stuff. I was going to put it in Tara's car. I wasn't sure where the bag drop-off was so I walked to the Burren thinking maybe it was there and then they told me it was back by the start which is where I just came from. I was kinda annoyed. I walked back to find it and luckily did, it was kinda out of the way and not very noticeable. It was close to race time and they were just starting to close it all up but I made it in time. Went back to the race start and looked more for Tara. I thought I would find her because she's so tall but I didn't and the race started so I just jumped in somewhere and started running. I hadn't been running that long when Tara showed up next to me. Yeah! We finally hooked up and ran together. The first mile was soooo crowded it took us 10 min. That pretty much ruined any chance of a good race time so I just tried not to push it and relax. Tara's been injured lately so she didn't want to push it. We ran a comfortable race and so our time speaks to that, and the crowded first mile. Tara had to take off right after the race to get to Thanksgiving dinner and I didn't want to wait in a long line at the Burren for beer at that point so we left right after. It was kinda neat to get up and race and get home in such a short amount of time.

I was starving the rest of the day trying to save my appetite for turkey because we didn't eat until like 6 or so. I think I ate too fast because I've felt sick ever since.

New Heather Martin Reporting News Feature: Weekend Recap!

Give me a shout if you like this added feature, where I give a semi-detailed account of my weekend.

Friday started off awesome! I was at work a little late extracting DNA in the hood w/ the UV light on the whole time. Way to go dumbass. The hood sucks and there's a separate switch for the UV light which I forgot about so I turned on the working light and didn't realize the UV didn't go off.

Got home, was starving because I hadn't eaten lunch, did a short run, showered, got ready to go out dancing, and ate breakfast for dinner: pancakes, scrambled eggs and toast courtesy of Jenn.

Didn't have any good clothes to wear dancing and ended up wearing boring clothes, feeling ridiculous when I left the house but it didn't seem to matter in the grand scheme of things. Met Tara and Jess at Remington's for a quick drink before heading to the Alley for dancing. We decided to try the Liquor Store. The guy at the door was checking my license and said 'Speaking of #2.' I had no clue what he was talking about, honestly the first thing that came to mind was poop, especially since I was at the bar telling the girls about rectaling cows and how you get poop all over you, and he got all excited yelling 'Rock Chalk Jayhawk' at me and I still wasn't sure what the deal was but figured it was something about Kansas University sports. I'm forgetting to tell you that I have a Kansas license so that's what sparked it all. I later found out that the KU football team had beaten the #2 team or something like that.

Got in the club. Not many people there yet. A small amount of chicks dancing, the crowd seemed very young. They have mechanical bulls there too so you can waste time watching that. Whoever's in charge of the bull makes it kinda easy for the chicks so they stay on longer and the guys get thrown off in a second or two, hard, right on their head usually. Got some more drinks to waste time, shot of tequila...

Eventually we started dancing. I thought the music was fine. Some guy was all up on Jess and wouldn't leave her alone and it turned into a bit of a shoving match. I think I got the last shove in w/ some obscenity and he was gone. Soon we each ended up w/ our own dancing partner and that's how we stayed until closing. Mine and Tara's guy were from Brazil, they were not friends though. Mine was a good dancer so I had a great time dancing w/ him all night and he was okay looking but he was only 5'7" according to his license. Too short for me! At the end of the night he said 'You my girlfriend' over and over among some other things. I ended up giving him my phone number though I ditched him at the Common where his car was parked. He wanted to drive me home but I insisted I would walk, which I did. He texted me the nexted day 'Hi Honey I miss you.' Nothing since. There was another guy I met at the end of the night that I thought was friends w/ this guy and he got my number too and then turned out he wasn't friends w/ my guy, and proceeded to call me several times the minute I walked away from the club and again on Saturday night. Nothing since Saturday though. Luckily we all made it home okay and had a fun night.

When I got home I was trying to get confirmation that Tara made it home okay, which finally came around 4am I think. I did my usual late-night after going out ritual of putting on Intervention On Demand from A&E and fell asleep around 5am. I kept waking up all night and drinking the soda sitting by my bed while I counted to 10 each time. Weird.

Finally got up at 9:30, couldn't stay asleep, and had some breakfast w/ the roomies. I was going to Maine that afternoon and needed to get ready.

I was going to see B Lu and Dan in Maine but Dan was flying into Boston that afternoon from Kansas so I was to meet him at the bus station and take the bus w/ him to Maine. I got to the 2:15 bus at 2:13 and tried to hold it for Dan but he didn't make it in time so we got on the 3:15. Once in Portland we drove to Bath for dinner because we were going to The Chocolate Church for a night of music. We saw the Heat It Up! Series. It was really good but a little weird because you're sitting in a church watching them perform and it was a small, older crowd so it was pretty mellow. I bought Kate Schrock's CD Indiana. I didn't know it was on iTunes; I could have saved $5.01. The song 'If Loving You' is what made me buy the CD but the CD version wasn't as good as live.

Sunday Me, B Lu and Dan drove to Lewiston area to meet Jen and James to have brunch at Denny's. We all got to catch up before B Lu and Dan move back to Kansas at the end of November. James is auditioning for some Reality Poker Show. Check out his YouTube audition video. He really, really, really, really, really wants to be picked, huh? James, I hope you get picked but that video is crazy!

I made it back to Boston in time to hook up w/ Tara and make it to The Burren to pick up our bibs for the Gobble, Gobble, Gobble 4 miler on Thursday. Then we went across the street to Joshua Tree so we could sit, The Burren was kinda full, and had a beer. Then we ditched it because it was lame and went back to The Burren for more beer and food. Then we decided to go home but Joslynn was just back from the Joshua Tree in Allston and wanted to hook up so although we were already driving away we made a crazy loop around Davis Sq. and found Joslynn on the corner and then went into this other sketchy bar Sligo's. Had some more beer, though Tara was DD and switched to soda, we made her dance w/ a nice Irish guy and then proceeded to meet the rest of the Irish gang that none of us could understand. Irish accents and lots of beer don't mix well when trying to verbally communicate. It's hard enough without the beer.

Eventually made it home and life was back to usual.

Jonathan asked me the other day

Here's the little long of it, courtesy of RobReed:

The first thing is to define what 'a weblog like yours' means. There are a number of defining characteristics of your weblog; things that make it unlike most weblogs.

You host it.

The majority of weblogs are run on a hosted service like Typepad, and Wordpress.

Yours runs on your own server.

There are advantages and disadvantages of both. A hosted service is easier to setup. He could have a weblog up and running in minutes (or less). Many hosted services offer multiple levels of service. Basic accounts are often free but feature limited. Full or premium accounts are typically reasonably priced (though looking at typepad.com now there premium account is $29.95 a month or $299.50 a year which seems really really steep). There are other levels of service.

With a hosted service you typically interact with the site using a web based admin interface, and post via web forms, or other similar sorts of front-ends (maybe a standalone application that you install on your computer, or a browser extension that allows you to quickly make a post about a website you're visiting, etc).

You can extend or customize your weblog by mixing and matching various modules (extensions). You can change the look of your weblog using various pre-defined templates or even design and develop your own.

These services tend to be easy to use and fairly feature complete (if you're willing to pay a fee for some of those features).

The biggest limitation you're likely to encounter are storage or bandwidth limits. You may be limited to a max amount of storage space, a maximum amount of data that you can transfer to the service in a given period of time, or a max number of traffic generated by visitors to your site. You can usually buy your way out of these restrictions.

Other significant issues:

Because you don't have direct access to your content, you want to make sure you know how to export all of your content should you want to move your weblog to another service in the future. This process may not be straight-forward. For example, the photo sharing site flickr has a number of restrictions about exporting content from the service which limits its appeal.

You may not be able to do everything you want to do. The host chooses features/functionality that it feels are appropriate for the majority of their users. You might disagree.

With a free account you are likely to have a address that appears to be a subdirectory of or subdomain of the hosts domain. For example, typepad.com/yourweblog/. You may prefer to have your own domain, e.g. yourweblog.com. You should be able to buy this 'feature' but you'll need to upgrade beyond the free accounts.

If you have your own server you can do pretty much whatever you want and because the most popular weblog software packages are free you don't need to worry about software costs (or reoccurring monthly payments). Of course maintaining a server isn't free.

Your site is somewhat unique because it doesn't use one of the most popular packages (movabletype and wordpress being the two biggest). Instead it runs on a lightweight script called Blosxom. The blosxom site does a good job of presenting the major advantages.

The style of interaction is very simple. Posts are simple text files. You can create and edit content either via a web form or using any text editor. You can publish the content simply by moving the posts to the server (there are many different ways).

So he can tell you if he's interested in a hosted service or hosting his own weblog and then he can go from there.

Cape Cod Marathon Relay Results

I did this race w/ some CRC teammates a couple weekends ago. Some of us stayed overnight and met up to tour the course, grab some dinner and watch the Red Sox in the playoffs back at the Admiralty Inn the night before the race.

Race day was so much fun. I've never done a marathon relay before and I would totally recommend it. It was so much fun watching and cheering for your teammates and driving around the course to the different hand offs, besides running w/ an orange fluorescent wooden baton for miles was awesome!

Really?

Thanks, very nice of you.

First, check my Amazon.com Wish List and there's no need to worry that I already have it or won't use it.

A quick Froogle search can't hurt.
