Thursday July 17, 2008 I ran the Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5 miler for the 2nd year in a row. Even though my running had been shitty, I wanted to compare time to the previous year. Went w/ Funshine (new nickname for db) and Cleo. We drove which sucked because traffic was a bitch and I didn't think I'd make the race. Luckily Jake got there before me and had picked up my race packet. Funshine dropped me off to find Jake and he went to park. Found Jake and got my number on, made a trip to the bathroom even though the lines seemed too long, seemed plenty of time to spare. Saw some other CRCers, Jake's whole family was there, mom and brother were racing too, dad was snappin' photos. Didn't start that close to the start, this race has no chip so gun time is all there is. Wouldn't matter in the end, I slowed down. It was fucking hot that Tuesday night, too hot for me! Funshine and Cleo ran next to me at the start and then when they couldn't get further apparently Cleo was howling away, though I didn't seem to hear it. Maintained an okay pace for most of the race but I don't have any way to time myself right now, never got another watch after losing mine in Australia. Had to rely on mile splits which was better than nothing but harder to judge my pace. Started slowing down in the last mile and eventually got passed by Jake's brother and some CRC girls. Picked it up for the finish and finished less than a minute behind them so not that bad. Stuck around a little bit at the end for post-race food and stuff. But it was hot, I was drenched and we had Cleo.

I already talked a little about it but today Tara wrote a nice little race report that I will post w/ my results. Here's the website for the race w/ links to full results.
A ten dollar registration fee. Sounds great right? On Sunday, March 9th some CRCers drove to the beautiful town of Beverly to race the 30k and 10.5k (yes odd number). Well now we know why some registrations are so cheap and some aren't. Water stops were just that. Water. Oh and sometimes no cups! Hey we have a huge container o' water, but good luck figuring out how to drink it when you're around mile 15 :) Ok despite the mockery and jokes, the race itself was a tough but great challenge--gusts of wind especially along the 4 mile run right next to the ocean. We passed quaint beaches, elaborate estates and a few volunteers spacing out as we ask "which way? left? right?" Don't expect a cheering crowd but if you can enjoy the beauty that Beverly offers, it's a great race. The strong winds made this race against your thought of a PR.
One poor CRCer sprained her knee toward the end of the race, and still was bold enough to run the last few miles in agony. And she still beat many other runners...hope you're healing quick Joslynn. Definitely a no-frills type of race. Water and other basic fruit were provided at the end. You'll see me doing this race again next year. I'll bring my own Gatorade thank you.
I had a funny email exchange w/ the race director because my race packet got lost somehow when I went to pick it up so I had to email him to see about getting the shirt I paid extra for. The email he sent me was hilarious:
Hello Heather
I apologize for the race packet.
WOW # 3!!! you must be seeded for next year!!!Q: Should I produce the race again next year?
I will get the shirt to you.
I also apologize for any lack of water or course markers that may have caused any race problems for you.
HAP
Dude, this guy is crazy, I was nowhere near #3. What is he talking about?

The race today was fun. Tara picked me up at 7:30am and we made the 1 hr 40 min trek to Hyannis. Got to Jake's hotel room w/ plenty of time to spare, do the bathroom thing without having to wait in crazy lines and show up to the start right beforehand w/out waiting in the cold. I think it was 20-something degrees out but the sun was out most of the race so actually the weather was pretty good. It was a full race, complete w/ a 10K and a marathon. We were doing the half. I didn't want to go out too hard, it was more for training for me, so I tried to be conservative but still push a little. Anything under 2 hrs I'm happy w/ so especially since I didn't push it and still got under 2 hrs. I'm happy. I didn't sleep much last night, was still a little sick w/ cough and sore from hip hop so I'm happy w/ how things turned out. The best was post-race. We went back to Jake's room. Before we left for the race he turned the heat up all the way so when we got back to the room after the race it was nice and toasty. I took a shower right quick, I was freezing once I stopped running. Then we hung out in the room for a long time drinking beer and warming up, being silly, catching up w/ our relatives on the phone to let them know how we did. I even caught a little of the SU game but that reminds me I didn't see the end so I wonder if they won. I need to go check. At 3pm we got kicked out of the room so we went to eat. We all got omelets, and they all had seafood in them. Mine was lobster, spinach and tomato, very yummy! but I couldn't finish it all and we also had more beer, cape cod red ale or something like that I forget. It was all very fun and can't wait for next time. Oh, plus Jake brought my whipped PB so now I finally got to try it and it's good, especially w/ apples.
The big event before the race: I delivered my baby! Jake didn't want to help but he had no choice. Jake doesn't like vaginas!!

After the race we just wanted to relax!

I ran a race in the morning. The Gobble, Gobble, Gobble in Davis Sq. It was very convenient to take the T from Charles/MGH to Davis but that's when the trouble started. I was trying to meet Tara and her sister before the race and we were on the phone when we were trying to coordinate where to meet and my phone went dead. So I stood around trying to spot her but when it was 15 min. to race time I had to go find the bag drop-off to get rid of my stuff. I was going to put it in Tara's car. I wasn't sure where the bag drop-off was so I walked to the Burren thinking maybe it was there and then they told me it was back by the start which is where I just came from. I was kinda annoyed. I walked back to find it and luckily did, it was kinda out of the way and not very noticeable. It was close to race time and they were just starting to close it all up but I made it in time. Went back to the race start and looked more for Tara. I thought I would find her because she's so tall but I didn't and the race started so I just jumped in somewhere and started running. I hadn't been running that long when Tara showed up next to me. Yeah! We finally hooked up and ran together. The first mile was soooo crowded it took us 10 min. That pretty much ruined any chance of a good race time so I just tried not to push it and relax. Tara's been injured lately so she didn't want to push it. We ran a comfortable race and so our time speaks to that, and the crowded first mile. Tara had to take off right after the race to get to Thanksgiving dinner and I didn't want to wait in a long line at the Burren for beer at that point so we left right after. It was kinda neat to get up and race and get home in such a short amount of time.
I was starving the rest of the day trying to save my appetite for turkey because we didn't eat until like 6 or so. I think I ate too fast because I've felt sick ever since.

Really?
Thanks, very nice of you.
First, check my Amazon.com Wish List and there's no need to worry that I already have it or won't use it.
Tip: Check around for better pricing. Amazon's pricing is usually good, but not always the best available.
A quick Froogle search can't hurt.
